The next day, International Pi Day, our math class meets in the library under a banner proclaiming HAPPY PI DAY. Mrs. Holbein wears a white blouse with a sparkly pi on it today, and she cheerily cracks pi jokes after we complete several practice measurements of pi.
“What do you get when you divide a Native Alaskan by his circumference?
“Eskimo pi.”
“What do you get when you divide a jack-o’-lantern by its circumference?
“Pumpkin pi.”
Speaking of which, we’re supposed to eat some pie, but one of the students, in typical eighth-grade fashion, forgot he was supposed to bring in forks and plates (a nice touch, those daily planners for eighth graders, but a losing battle against an eighth-grade boy’s natural catatonia). What do you get when you divide an eighth-grade boy by his circumference?
“Pie? Did someone say pie?”
Luckily, eighth-grade girls are the solution to eighth-grade boys, at least in this instance. My art partner, Samantha, volunteers to run to the cafeteria for forks and plates while Mrs. Holbein projects a computer screen on the wall with various illustrations of pi. I doubt Mr. Mayhew would have used a computer even if they’d been around when I was here. He definitely wouldn’t have given us pie. And he would have thought singing songs about pi an abomination. In that last instance, I would agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Mayhew, at least when eighth-grade boys are involved. Apparently, I’m supposed to stand in front of the group with three other eighth-grade boys who might as well be in leg irons for all their enthusiasm, and mumble some Pi Day songs along with them. They’ve probably practiced once more than I have (zero), so I join in a song sung to the tune of “O Christmas Tree”:
